Puppy Training
You have to train your puppy so that when its older it does as you command. They need to be
taught how to behave so that when they grow up they are not bad. If you don't train your puppy
it will dig holes, ruin the carpet, poo in your living room, and wreck everything in their path.
It is very enjoyable for the dog, because they enjoy learning and can earn a treat. Also dogs
get bored if they have nothing to do. A puppy has to learn a lot before it becomes a big dog so
you have to be teaching your puppy all the time. If you watched the television programme 'It's
me or the Dog' you will have got lots of puppy training tips. The book is available to buy Here.
The main commands to teach your puppy is Sit, where to wee and poo, where your puppy is allowed
to go, where your puppy is to sleep and what it is allowed to chew.
To train your puppy you need a training clicker, You can get one from any pet shop, you also
need some tasty treats. Chocolate, sugary or dairy products are bad treats to give your dog.
when you tell the dog to 'sit' wait until your puppy sits and then click and reward your dog.
It's as simple as that. You can use the clicker to teach your dog anything, just tell your puppy
a different command.
New puppies mouth. Mouthing is when they bite you, puppies don't want to bite to hurt you they
are just playing. To teach puppies to stop mouthing, yelp and ignore your puppy. The dog stops
mouthing because it wants to play, and it realises that when it mouths you wont play any more.
Dog don't like to be starred at because they think you are being aggressive to them and they
really don't like it. You need to teach your puppy that it ok when people stare at it and that
it is not going to be harmed. You do this by starring at your puppy and praising it.
You need to make sure that you can touch your dog everywhere in case your dog becomes ill. Then
if it has to go to the vets, the vet can touch your dog to see what the matter is.
Lead training. You need to teach your dog about going for a walk in the street. It needs to sit
at roads and wait until it is clear to cross. You need to teach your dog not to pull. Katie used
to pull on the lead, so we bought a Gentle Leader (Nose Strap) that pulls on her nose is she
tries to pull. This has help Katie to get used to not pulling us down the street.
Sometimes its us and not the puppy who needs to learn new tricks. Kanga used to go bonkers when
she saw one of our cats when she was out on a walk. It was bad because whenever she was out she
would try to chase them, and it was a struggle for the person holing the lead. So what we did
was to changed our behaviour so every time we saw a cat we would say "Clever girl you found a
cat" instead of telling her off for jumping at the cat. Now she don't pull and go mad at cats.
We taught Katie to go on bike rides with us. We used to go on bike rids nearly every single day and Manga ran beside us and learned to keep out of the way. But she did have a few accidents before she learnt.
